The Gypsy and The Giant: My Life with Longdogs

What is it like to live in a small town with a couple of longdogs? Especially one that can lick your chin without taking his feet of the floor.......

Big Dog Takes a Seat

I recently found this rather old photo of Mac when he was a puppy (yes, really, just a wee puppy) taking a rest on the stairs.  I guess it can be hard work finding somewhere comfy to rest those big feet!

Longdog lounging

What can be better than a two hour walk in the fields and then a comfy kip on the sofa (with all the cushions)?

Big Dog Hiding

Its not always easy being a big dog.  The world can seem a scary place and what better place to hide than under your mum's legs?  Yep, nothing can get me whilst I'm here because I am hiding and no-one can see me.  Its the best place to watch what's going on out in the fields too, because its like I'm inivisible to deer and rabbit and stuff.  Oh yes I am.

Autumn with the Longdogs

Just a little note to let you know we are still around and walking the woods, hills and beaches of the East Coast of Scotland. As you can see, the Gorgeous Gordon MacDonald is getting a little bit grey around the muzzle and so is Kizzy - although you can't really see it in this photo of her.  Both dogs recently celebrated their 6th birthdays with a lovely bit of Liver Cake (homemade by their loving humans) and spent their special day chasing waves in the sea and lolling around on the sofa afterwards.  Perfect.

Game On

You are never to old to have fun and running for the sake of it is just about the best fun you can have if you are a running dog.  Who says sighthounds have no recall?  See my two going away.....and coming back!

Out In the Fields with the Longdogs

Me and the longdogs:  happy to roam the range.  Thinking of a quote from the wonderful Scottish poet Norman MacCaig:

Who owns this landscape?-
The millionaire who bought it or
the poacher staggering downhill in the early morning
with a deer on his back?
Who possesses this landscape?-
The man who bought it or
I who am possessed by it?

Spring with the Longdogs (and welcome, new kids on the block)

It looks as though spring is really on its way here in Scotland.  As I walked around the lakes the other day I was caught between the loud repeated rat-tat-tat of a woodpecker and the mournful terwit-terwoo of a late to bed owl.  I then spotted a heron, hunched up on a log flanked by two angry looking swans.  Soon there will be new eggs to hatch and new life on the lakes.  My pond is already full of frog spawn, the garden full of daffodils.  I love the transitional seasons.  I think the dogs do too - especially spring, when its not too hot and they can really kick up their heels.  I think the word 'frollicking' is a good one to describe how they are just now.  Its exhausting work though,as you can see from these pictures.

New Kids on The Block

As its spring, the time of new life and renewal, I would like to say farewell to Sam, my friend's terrier who died a wee while ago and HELLO to his new dogs Chips and Beans, a pair of Kerry Blue/Collie crosses.  May their walks be long and happy together, just as they had been for Sam.

Heaven goes by favour, if it went by merit you would stay out and your dog would go in. - Mark Twain

The weather might be chilly but its magnificent on the beach just now.  The dogs love the long soft, flat stretches for really letting go and running like hell.  I made a little video for your enjoyment.
